Most two-stage reciprocating compressors are designed to operate up to 175 psi. Most rotary screw compressors are designed to operate efficiently at 90-125 psi. Some applications require large amounts of compressed air in the range of 45-60 psi. Rotary screw compressors designed to operate with a small motor and consume less power than machines designed to operate at higher pressures. A special structure is required for sufficient operation in this range. Some applications require 200 psi compressed air, but are constrained by space, noise, or cost considerations for using an improved rotary screw compressor rather than a reciprocating compressor. 3, 4 or 5 high pressure air compressors capable of reaching pressures of 300 to 5000 psi are used in industrial environments, drilling rigs, diving operations, fire stations, etc.

Low pressure rotary screw compressor
Rotary screw compressors compress air using two meshed helical rotors (screws) in a precision machined stator. As the rotor rotates, the spiral groove traps air and adheres to the stator wall. The volume of these grooves decreases as the rotor rotates and meshes, moving to the discharge port while compressing the air.
